4 types of Self-Care you can do today!

Self-Care in therapy

It seems like everyone is talking about self-care these days. You have probably heard how self-care is for everyone and how easy it should be to do. In my experience folks tend to have a hard time knowing what self-care is or how to implement it in their everyday lives. Overtime, I think I have cracked the code that can help you wrap your head around self-care activities you can do today.

Technically speaking self-care is the practice of improving your well-being. But, it is more than just random actions we fall into that feel “decent enough”. It includes intentional coping skills and activities that care for yourself in a holistic way.

My trick is to break down self-care into categories to make it easier to remember and implement. That way when you need to reach in your mind for self-care ideas you know where to look. And it can be easier to build a self-care routine pulling from each category.

The categories include: Mind, Body, Heart, and Spirit. I have given you a list of activities in each category below to try right away. The list I provide is just a start, but the categories can help you think of different activities that feel right for you.

4 Types of Self-Care

4 Types of Self-Care

Mind (Mental/Psychological)

Become more aware of your inner thoughts/feelings/experiences, have radical acceptance of things out of your control, take a moment to reflect, mindfulness (color, meditate), challenge negative thinking, get alone time, read a book, take opportunities to grow and learn, journal, and unplug from your phone.

Body (Physical)

Allow your body to rest and replenish, become more in tune with your physical experiences, progressive muscle relaxation, get restful sleep, eat healthy, drink water, exercise, dance, do yoga, and take care of your personal hygiene.

Heart (emotional)

Set healthy boundaries with your time & energy, engage with positive people and affirming environments, spend time with loved ones, reflect on emotional experiences, identify triggers, respect yourself, take time to sit with and express your feelings, laugh, get support from others, and journal.

Spirit (Essence/Purpose/Meaning)

Practice mindfulness and being present in the moment, pray, become aware of the non-material aspects of your life, participate in a cause, find purpose & passion, and reflect on what is meaningful to you in life.
